Mechanical properties of wood
Wood has good mechanical properties, but wood is an organic anisotropic material, the mechanical properties of the direction of the grain and the direction of the transverse grain are very different. The longitudinal tensile and compressive strength of wood is higher, but the transverse tensile and compressive strength is lower. Wood strength also varies with tree species, and is affected by wood defects, loading time, moisture content and temperature, among which wood defects and loading time have the greatest influence. Due to the different size and position of the joint and the different force properties (pull or pressure), the strength of jointed wood can be reduced by 30 to 60% than that of unjointed wood. The long-term strength of wood under long-term loading is almost half of the instantaneous strength.
